NWU Biological Sciences Requirements

The requirements for undertaking the North-West University (NWU) Biological Sciences.

Undergraduate study: 3 year BSc (Baccalaureus Scientiae)

The study period for a BSc degree in Natural and Agricultural Sciences is 3 years full-time.  We offer comprehensive market related degrees, which combine the subject groups Botany, Zoology, Geology, Geography, Microbiology, Physiology, and Tourism into different curricula.  The School of Biological Sciences, in association with the School of Geo- and Spatial Sciences, offers the largest selection of qualification programmes. With 22 programmes in total,they range from Zoology and Botany to Geology and Computer Science.  Unique to this school is the combination of main curricula subjects, where Physical and Chemical Sciences are combined with Environmental and Biological Sciences, and even Computer Science.  Each curriculum is compiled according to our stringent quality standards to ensure that your study with us will meet international standards and expectations.  To read more about the curricula that we offer, please refer to our yearbook or brochure.


Postgraduate Study

Furthering your study:

  • Honours
  • MSc
  • PhD

The benefits of completing an honours degree will enable you to further your study with a MSc,  and later a PhD.  It also offers you a deeper level of knowledge and experience pertaining to your study programme which will prove beneficial to your future employer.  Completing an honours degree will allow you to register as a Professional Natural Scientist at the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions. Our honours students are held in very high regard and have received some prestigious awards for their research.

 

This school has produced some excellent students and has the added benefit of having experts included among its academics.  Please see our NWU Experts section.  Applying for a postgraduate qualification will allow you to work in conjunction with the Laboratories, Research Centres and Units within the school and as well as our collaborations with other institutions.
