**The requirements for undertaking the North-West University (NWU) Mathematics.**

### Mathematics

Mathematics on school level comprises algebra, geometry, analytical geometry, trigonometry and differential calculus. All these divisions are studied more in-depth at university level. No student in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Statistics or Applied Mathematics can make progress in these subjects without a profound knowledge of the different divisions of Mathematics. The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the NWU is committed to quality and expertise. The tuition that you receive here prepares you for a modern, fast changing work environment that requires adaptability, practical skills, a multidisciplinary approach and teamwork.

At the faculty we develop balanced, critical thinkers and support is given to pre and postgraduate students so that they can reach their full potential as natural scientists.

**The following modules are taught in the subject group Mathematics:**

- Introductory Algebra and Analysis I
- Mathematical Techniques
- Basic Mathematical Techniques
- Introductory Algebra and Analysis II
- Mathematical Techniques
- Analysis III

### Applied Mathematics

Applied Mathematics is the subject that builds bridges between Mathematics and practice. Mathematics entails abstract concepts in order to establish logical structures. The purpose of Applied Mathematics is to solve real life problems by means of mathematical techniques. Applied Mathematics concentrates mainly on providing useful methods and techniques for fields such as Engineering, Physics and Computer Science.

### Mathematics Refresher Course

*What is the motivation for the refresher course?*

The lecturers at the NWU are continually attempting to improve their service to students. During recent years, students have experienced escalating problems with the transition from school to university, especially concerning Mathematics. To ease this transition, a refresher course is offered. The School for Mathematical and Statistical Sciences has decided that from 2011 the refresher course in mathematics will also be compulsory for mainstream mathematics students.
