The requirements for undertaking the University of Venda (UNIVEN) Bachelor in Disaster Risk Science.
The Bachelor of Environmental Science in Disaster Risk Reduction (BEnv.Sc DRR) programme provides skills that address reduction of risks grounded on an understanding of the nature and processes that lead to disasters. Graduates will be registered with Disaster Management Institute of Southern Africa (DMISA) the professional registration body.
• Minimum Admission Requirements:
o National Senior Certificate with an achievement rating of four (adequate achievement, 50-59%) or better in Physical Science and a five (60 – 69) in the following subjects; Geography; Life Sciences; Mathematics.
o Grade 12 certificate with exemption is required if Grade 12 has been achieved before 2008. National Senior Certificate with at least a D grade pass (50%) in Physical Science and at least a C (60%) in two of the following subjects; Geography; Life Sciences; Mathematics.
o Appropriate prior learning (RPL) in the relevant field of study, with adequate experience and testimonials, will also be considered as a criterion for admission.
• The NDMC Bursary Award:
The National Disaster Management Centre runs an Education Training Bursary Award that those admitted into the BEnv.Sc (DRR) programme can apply for. The bursary is competitive, and covers registration, tuition and book allowance.
• Career and Job Opportunity:
The BEnv.Sc (DRR) curriculum responds to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). The curriculum has a strong Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component that will place students into appropriate places in industry.
