The requirements for undertaking the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Department of Architecture.

Academic Programmes

Diploma in Architecture (D8AT1Q)

This programme is an entry-level qualification that addresses all knowledge fields in Architecture. The programme focuses on technological design development and

documentation and prepares students for further study or registration and employment as Candidate Architectural Technologists or further studies.

 

Career Opportunities

The architectural profession offers a wide range of specialisations, from management to technology and design.

Graduates will be able to register with the following professional bodies or institutes:

— South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP)

— South African Institute for Architectural Technologists SAIAT)

— Provincial Institutes of the SA Institute of Architects.

 

Admission Requirements — Diploma of Architecture (D8AT1Q)

— Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification with a minimum APS or M-score (as below) and degree admission.

— Submission of a prescribed portfolio once the application form has been processed.

Recommended school subjects include Art, Technical Drawing and/or Physical Science or Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD).

 

Average Point Score (APS)

A minimum APS of 23 with Mathematics OR 24 with Technical Maths is required to apply for the programme. Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this programme.

Submission of a specified portfolio

Applicants meeting the minimum entrance requirements (APS or M-score) for the Diploma in Architecture may be invited to submit a prescribed portfolio.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Apply online via the University of Johannesburg website (www.uj.ac.za).
  • Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be invited by the Faculty to submit a portfolio.
  • Portfolios must be submitted online.

 

ENTRANCE SELECTION PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

The entrance selection portfolio requirements for the Diploma in Architecture (D8AT1Q) will consist of the following sections:

 

Section 1 – Self-Introduction Video

Upload a video of yourself.

This video must not be longer than 30 seconds.

A video that is longer than 30 seconds will not be assessed.

Very briefly, in 30 seconds, tell us who you are and what you find most exciting about studying at FADA.

Submission Format:  MP4, 40MB

 

Section 2 – Three-Dimensional Drawing

Draw a three-dimensional drawing of a public building, once you have completed your drawing take a photo of the drawing and upload the photo.

* Note* (this drawing must not include a drawing of a shopping centre, a mall, or a casino)

Submission Format:  jpg, jpeg, png, 2MB

 

Section 3 – Written Component

Essay Question:

Write an essay of 300 words only, about a recent news story or article that had an impact on your life and

how did it influence you or change the way you think about an issue?

Submission Format:  Input to be made within the textbox provided as part of Section 3, via the on-line entrance selection portfolio submission process.

 Section 4 – Departmental Assessment

Drawing of a tree that is prevalent in your area and showing its distinctive characteristics and value to society.

Submission Format: Image: Upload format: Images, jpeg, png, 2MB

 

Disclaimer:

Submission of a portfolio must only take place once you have officially applied to the university and have been officially invited by the faculty to participate in the entrance selection portfolio process. You will be informed by means of an official entrance selection letter from the faculty regarding the portfolio requirements and the submission process.

No emailed portfolios (or part thereof) will be accepted.
